EV Interior Storage: Layout, Usability and Safety

Interior storage is the collection of trays, bins, pockets and covered compartments available to occupants; EV packaging can create useful new spaces, especially around the centre console, but an electric drivetrain does not guarantee more storage.

The best storage is reachable, easy to clean and able to keep its contents secure during acceleration, braking and cornering.

Where EVs can gain — and lose — storage

Removing a transmission tunnel may release space between the front seats or below a bridge-style console. A compact drive selector can free the upper console, and a dedicated EV platform may allow a sliding or removable console.

Other EV components compete for the same volume. The traction battery may remove under-seat depth, while airbags, ducts, structural crossmembers, speakers, electronic modules and rear climate equipment shape the remaining compartments. A front trunk is determined by the front drive unit, cooling system and crash structure; it is luggage storage, not proof of a spacious cabin.

Compare the actual compartments in the trim level you plan to buy. Different seat, audio, climate and drivetrain options can change the available space.

Centre-console storage

The centre console handles the items used most often: phone, keys, wallet, drinks, sunglasses and charging cables. Common layouts include a deep covered bin, an open tray, a split upper and lower deck or a movable module.

Check more than capacity:

  • Can you reach the bottom of a deep bin while seated?
  • Does the lid open without hitting an elbow or blocking a cup holder?
  • Are there dividers for small items, or will everything collect in one noisy compartment?
  • Can the lower tray be reached without bending into the passenger's space?
  • Will a bottle or travel mug remain stable under hard braking?
  • Is the liner removable and washable?

A wide open tray photographs well but needs a retaining edge and a non-slip surface. Objects should not be able to reach the driver's footwell or interfere with seat rails.

Phone storage and charging

A phone tray should hold different device sizes with and without a case. Wireless charging adds three practical tests: the phone must stay aligned, the status must be visible and heat must not stop charging. Check whether the tray grips the device during cornering and whether a large phone blocks another control or cup holder.

For wired charging, inspect the connector type, power rating and cable route. A port inside a closed bin can hide the phone and cable, but the compartment needs enough room and ventilation. A port beside an open shelf is easier to reach but may leave a cable across the console.

Glove box and dashboard compartments

A glove box should be judged by its opening, shape and access rather than the apparent width of the dashboard. Hinges, the cabin filter, passenger airbag and ventilation ducts often reduce usable volume.

Check whether:

  • documents fit without curling;
  • the lid clears the passenger's knees;
  • the release remains easy to find if it is operated through a screen;
  • the compartment is lit and lockable;
  • cooling, if fitted, has a useful shut-off;
  • the space can conceal valuables from view.

A touchscreen release can support a PIN or valet mode, but it also adds a dependency on the car's display and electrical system. Know the fallback described in the owner's manual.

Doors, seat backs and under-seat areas

Door bins are easiest to assess with the bottle, umbrella or cleaning kit you actually carry. A large opening can narrow towards the bottom, and a deep bin can be hard to clean. Check that bottles do not rattle against hard trim and that stored items cannot obstruct a door handle, speaker or puddle light.

Seat-back pockets are useful for lightweight items. Rigid pockets can protect a tablet but may reduce rear knee room; elastic pockets can sag or lose tension. Under-seat drawers make use of hidden volume, although they must remain latched and should not interfere with seat adjustment, wiring or rear passengers' feet.

Small compartments within children's reach need separate attention. Avoid storing medication, sharp tools, coins or detachable batteries where a child can access them.

Open storage needs restraint

Every loose object can move when the car changes speed. NHTSA advises drivers to secure cargo and to consider what a load would do under sudden braking, a bump or a collision. NHTSA: secure your load

Apply the same principle inside the cabin:

  • use covered bins for dense items such as power banks, metal bottles and tools;
  • keep the driver's footwell completely clear;
  • do not place objects on an airbag cover or where an airbag will deploy;
  • avoid hard objects on the parcel shelf or an unoccupied seat;
  • latch removable consoles and storage boxes before driving;
  • use luggage tie-downs for larger items rather than relying on a seat back.

The legal load limit and the compartment's own maximum load still apply even when an object fits.

Storage for EV equipment

Plan a dry, secure place for equipment that may travel with the car:

  • AC charging cable;
  • portable charging equipment, where appropriate for the market;
  • charge-port adapters;
  • tyre-repair kit or spare wheel tools;
  • reflective vest, warning triangle and first-aid kit;
  • vehicle-to-load adapter and cable, if supported;
  • ice scraper, gloves and cleaning cloth;
  • tow eye and any model-specific emergency tools.

Charging cables used outdoors may be wet or dirty. A separate underfloor well or washable bag is more practical than placing them on soft cabin trim. Do not store an adapter or heavy cable loose where it can strike an occupant.

Security and privacy

Covered storage hides objects from casual view, but it is not a safe. NHTSA recommends keeping valuables hidden and placing bags in the trunk where they cannot be seen. NHTSA: vehicle theft prevention

Check how the car handles:

  • glove-box locking and PIN protection;
  • valet or guest profiles;
  • access to the boot from the cabin;
  • notification if a door, window or storage lid is left open;
  • USB data access when another driver uses the car.

Do not leave a device visible on a charging pad after parking, even if the doors lock automatically.

A practical storage test

Bring a small set of real objects to the car:

  1. Your largest phone with its normal case.
  2. A common 500–750 ml bottle and your travel mug.
  3. Sunglasses in their case.
  4. A charging cable with the plug you use.
  5. A small bag or backpack.

Set the seats first. Place each item without moving the seat into an unrealistic position, and then operate the armrest, cup holders, drive selector and climate controls. Open and close every lid. Finally, imagine a hard stop: if an item can leave its compartment, the storage design is incomplete for that use.

Useful storage is not a litre figure. It is a system that gives each object a stable place without compromising comfort, controls or safety.
