800V Architecture
800-volt architecture describes an EV high-voltage system designed around a substantially higher nominal voltage than the common 400-volt class. The name identifies a voltage class; the battery voltage still changes with state of charge and design.
Why it matters
For the same electrical power, higher voltage allows lower current. Lower current can reduce resistive losses and the heat and conductor size associated with carrying very high power. In a compatible vehicle and charger, this can support high DC charging power without requiring equally high current.
Voltage alone does not determine charging speed. The battery's charge curve, temperature, state of charge, charger limits, and cable cooling all matter. Compatibility with lower-voltage chargers also varies: some vehicles use an onboard boost function, while others accept reduced power or depend on charger-side voltage support.
