Exit Warning

Exit Warning alerts an occupant when opening a door could conflict with an approaching cyclist, motorcycle or vehicle.

Sensors used

Exit warning commonly uses rear corner Radar to track cyclists, vehicles or other road users approaching from behind. Side or rear Cameras can add classification and visual context, while Ultrasonic sensors may contribute at very short range on selected vehicles.

Door state and occupant intent determine when the warning is relevant. Sensor Fusion covers object association; Calibration, Cleaning and Sensor Health covers blocked or damaged corner sensors.

How it works

Rear and side radar sensors can continue monitoring after the vehicle stops. Cameras or ultrasonic sensors may add information. The controller predicts whether an approaching road user will reach the door zone while an occupant is likely to open it.

A warning can appear in the mirror, door trim or ambient lighting. Some vehicles add a tone, haptic feedback or brief resistance at the door handle.

The dooring problem

Cyclists and powered two-wheelers can approach quickly and silently relative to an occupant inside a parked vehicle. Mirrors may not cover the full approach, and a passenger on the traffic side may not habitually check.

Exit Warning extends awareness but does not confirm that opening is safe. The occupant should look behind and open the door gradually. A far-hand opening technique naturally turns the body toward approaching traffic.

Operating period

The function may remain active for a limited time after the vehicle is switched off. Coverage can differ by door, side and target type. A system designed for moving vehicles may not detect a slow bicycle, while a close metal barrier can affect sensor interpretation.

Important questions include:

  • which doors receive warnings;
  • how long monitoring continues after parking;
  • whether the system detects cyclists and motorcycles;
  • whether it only warns or physically delays opening;
  • how warnings work when the vehicle loses low-voltage power.

Relationship to blind-spot monitoring

Exit Warning often reuses blind-spot radar, but the prediction is different. Blind-spot monitoring supports lane changes while driving; Exit Warning predicts a conflict between an opening door and passing traffic while stationary.

The functions may share a package name without sharing identical target coverage.

Testing

A meaningful test records target type and speed, the vehicle's distance from the traffic path, warning timing and whether the door was merely unlocked, partly opened or physically restrained. An icon alone is useful only if occupants understand it before pulling the handle.
