Range Anxiety

Last modified: Jul 31, 2026

Range anxiety is concern that an electric vehicle may not have enough usable energy, or access to suitable charging, to complete a planned journey.

What creates or reduces it

The concern can reflect several separate uncertainties: remaining range, weather and speed effects, charger spacing, connector compatibility, charger reliability, queues, payment access, or the charging needed at the destination. It should not be reduced to battery capacity alone.

Useful planning matches the vehicle to the actual journey. Drivers can check expected consumption, arrival state of charge, alternatives along the route, charging-network status, and destination charging. A reserve for weather, detours, or an unavailable charger can make the plan more resilient.

The practical need differs between drivers. Reliable home or workplace charging may cover routine travel with little public charging, while frequent remote or long-distance journeys place more weight on fast-charging coverage.
