NCA Battery

An NCA battery uses lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) as the positive-electrode material, or cathode, in its lithium-ion cells. The name identifies a cathode family, not a complete cell or battery-pack design.

Why it matters

NCA is a nickel-rich layered-oxide chemistry used where high specific capacity and energy are valuable. Compared with NMC, NCA uses aluminum instead of manganese as the third named metal in the cathode formula. Neither label describes the exact material recipe or the other parts of the cell.

The NCA label alone therefore cannot determine an EV’s range, charging speed, service life, or safety. Those outcomes also depend on the anode, electrolyte, cell construction, voltage limits, thermal management, battery-management strategy, and pack integration.
