North American Charging System (NACS)
NACS is the name originally used for Tesla's compact North American AC and DC charging connector. Its standardized form is defined by SAE J3400, which covers the vehicle coupling and related charging requirements.
What the name tells you
The same vehicle inlet can carry AC charging power or DC fast-charging power, using shared power contacts in different operating modes. The physical connector does not promise a particular charging rate; voltage, current, charger capability, vehicle limits, cable temperature, and communication all affect the result.
Vehicle and charging-network support must be checked separately. Native inlets, approved adapters, software enablement, and access arrangements can differ by vehicle, charger, and model year. A connector that fits is therefore not by itself proof that every charging function is available.
