DC Fast Charging

DC fast charging supplies direct current from an external charger to an EV's high-voltage battery. Because conversion happens in the charging equipment, the session does not depend on the vehicle's onboard AC charger.

What determines the speed

The charger and vehicle communicate before and during the session. Actual power is limited by the lower of what the charger can provide and what the vehicle can accept at that moment. State of charge, battery temperature, pack voltage, cable temperature, and the vehicle's charge curve all influence the result.

The highest number displayed during a session is not the same as its average charging power. Time over a stated state-of-charge interval and the energy added are better for comparing complete stops. Charging generally tapers as the battery approaches a high state of charge, so route stops often end before the battery is full.
