Rear Cross-Traffic Alert

Rear Cross-Traffic Alert warns about traffic approaching from either side while the vehicle reverses out of a space or driveway.

Sensors used

Rear cross-traffic alert most commonly uses rear corner Radar to track vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians approaching from the side. A rear Cameras can add context, and Ultrasonic sensors may contribute at very short range. Gear and vehicle-motion state come from Positioning and Vehicle Motion.

The system must distinguish crossing traffic from stationary surroundings. Sensor Fusion covers track association, while Calibration, Cleaning and Sensor Health covers damaged, blocked or contaminated rear sensors.

Side-looking detection

Rear corner radar can see farther sideways than a typical reversing camera. The controller estimates the approaching target's speed, direction and time to reach the reversing path.

A warning often identifies the affected side with an arrow, camera overlay, mirror symbol or tone. The driver remains responsible for stopping.

What it can detect

Passenger vehicles are the most common target. Some systems also detect motorcycles, cyclists or pedestrians, but coverage and minimum approach speed vary.

The feature is most useful when adjacent parked vehicles block the driver's view. Those same vehicles can also block radar until the approaching target is close.

Alert versus braking

Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is a warning function. Rear Automatic Braking can apply the brakes when a reverse collision is imminent. A parking package can contain both, but the presence of an alert does not guarantee intervention.

The system also differs from parking sensors, which mainly detect close objects behind the vehicle, and from a reversing camera, which provides an image without necessarily interpreting motion.

Limitations

The vehicle may not warn for:

  • traffic approaching outside the sensor field;
  • a target hidden by a large vehicle or wall;
  • a slow pedestrian or narrow bicycle;
  • a steep or sharply angled driveway;
  • sensors obstructed by snow, mud, a trailer or a bicycle rack.

Radar reflections in confined parking structures can also create nuisance alerts. The dashboard should indicate when the feature is unavailable.

Safe use

Reverse slowly, check both directions directly and use the camera and mirrors as additional views. Stop when visibility is insufficient. The warning buys attention and time; it does not prove that the full path is clear.

A comparison should state target types, approach speeds, side range, warning direction and whether braking is included.
