Battery-Electric Vehicle (BEV)

A battery-electric vehicle (BEV) is powered only by electricity stored in a rechargeable traction battery. One or more electric motors propel the vehicle, and the battery is replenished from an external electrical supply.

How it works

A BEV normally includes a high-voltage battery pack, power electronics, electric motor, charge port, onboard AC charger, DC/DC converter, thermal-management system, and a smaller low-voltage battery. Regenerative braking can return some of the vehicle's kinetic energy to the traction battery during deceleration.

Unlike a plug-in hybrid, a BEV has no internal-combustion engine for propulsion and no fuel tank for extending the trip after the battery is depleted. It must be charged, whether at home, at work, at a destination, or at a public charging site.

What the term does and does not mean

BEVs produce no exhaust emissions at the vehicle because they have no combustion engine. That is a tailpipe statement, not a claim of zero lifecycle impact: electricity generation, vehicle and battery production, maintenance, and recycling are separate parts of a full environmental assessment.

Range and charging performance vary widely. Battery capacity, energy consumption, temperature, speed, elevation, payload, tires, and climate control affect how far a BEV travels, while the vehicle, charger, connector, and battery conditions determine charging time.

BEV is sometimes used interchangeably with “all-electric vehicle.” The broader term “electric vehicle” can also include plug-in hybrids or other electrified drivetrains, so EVKX uses BEV when the fully electric distinction matters.
